First impressions
Calm contemplation of the world out there and of the future. A man in his element.
What is happening in the card?
An elegant, well-dressed man, surveys his surroundings from a safe and comfortable vantage point – quite possibly the battlements of his own castle.
He holds a globe in one hand and a staff in the other as he looks out over the land and sea and contemplates his next move. Another staff, or Wand, is secured safely to the battlements next to him. That’s not going anywhere.
Where is he going next? What plans is he making? What future is he imagining? What lands to conquer? What people to meet and riches to find?
How can we relate to this card?
We experience the energy of the 2 of Wands when are in the early stages of a project. Ideas are formed, plans are being laid down and the next step, when we are ready is to put those plans into action.
While planning ahead we are also sure to protect what we have already achieved.

Message & affirmations
Today, I take inspired action, positive forward steps however great or small, towards reaching the goals that I have imagined.
“Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine and at last you create what you will.”
~ George Bernard Shaw
My personal experiences of this card
For me, the 2 of Wands always feels like the prelude to the more active 3 of Wands. A stepping stone.
Even as I write these words, I wonder if perhaps this might be where I sometimes fall down… in the planning stage.
The planning stage is vital, but we do also need to know when it’s time to start with the action.
Events, situations & readings
In a work/career/business spread:
This is the planning stage. Don’t rush it. Let the ideas come and the imagination do its job and then lay down a plan.
And plans need steps, to break them down and keep you on track towards the end goal.
In a relationship spread:
You may be considering your future with someone new – or a new phase of an existing relationship. What’s the plan? What might your future with this person look like? Will they travel along with you?
People & interaction with other cards
With Aces, the 2 of Wands asks you to focus your mind on new beginnings – at work, in business, at home, on your travels and in relationships – and how you might like them to develop in the future.
How are you going to get there?
With high manifesting cards like The Magician and hardworking and organisational cards like the 8 of Pentacles and The Emperor, the 2 of Wands puts a positive spin on your future plans if only you can draw on their strong energy for putting plans in action.
Questions, prompts & insights
What are your dreams for the future? Where do you want to go? What do you want to achieve and how do you plan to get there?
Are you ready to take that first step? Into the unknown and out of the safety and security of what you already know? Go for it!
