First impressions
This looks like murder. Death by a ‘thousand’ cuts. Overkill.
What is happening in the card?
A man lies prone, his body in a slightly awkward position, near the water’s edge. He appears to be dead. 10 long blades have been plunged in his back and blood flows from his wounds, soaking the robe that covers him and onto the surrounding earth.
The sky overhead is a pitch black yet, on the far side of the water, dawn breaks over a distant mountain range. Hope is on the horizon.
It seems that though something terrible has taken place the new day comes, inevitably. The world keeps turning.
How can we relate to this card?
Ouch. This is one of those notorious cards in the Tarot deck, along with other such scary cards like The Tower, Death and some of the trickier swords, that evokes fear.
And why wouldn’t it? It looks like bloody murder has taken place here. And the picture painted doesn’t necessarily tell a story of a fair fight. He has been stabbed in the back, after all. Some of the blows may even been delivered post mortem. Over kill.
Taken a little less literally, of course, we feel the energy of the 10 of Swords when something is coming to a painful (possibly drawn out) yet inevitable (necessary?) end. But just as day follows night this end brings with it a new beginning and it is this that we can choose to focus on when the 10 of Swords appears.
This card calls upon us to let go and let die that which causes us pain. To break out of old patterns and negative thinking. And to focus on new goals.

My personal experiences of this card
When the 10 of Swords comes up for me I ask myself what needs to go in my life. What is coming to an end?
Generally, I choose to take this as a positive sign that the worst is over, and has happened. And, if I am able to move past it then I can look forward to a new beginning. A brighter future. New goals.
Events, situations & readings
In a relationship spread:
The 10 of Swords can indicate the end of a relationship that was not working or the end of a difficult phase in a relationship. This cards asks you to let go of the past and old resentments in order to move on.
In a work/career spread:
The end of a bad phase in your work life. Either the end of a job or moving out of a difficult time at work or in business. Watch out for exhaustion and burnout. Pick yourself up, brush yourself off and look to a brighter future.
Another very literal interpretation might be that you need to watch your back at work.
Reversed:
A reversal of the 10 of Swords may suggest an inability to see or accept that something is over. You may be experiencing pain and finding it hard to let go and move on. Struggling to get over it. By prolonging the end you are prolonging the pain.
People & interaction with other cards
With The Tower, the 10 of Swords indicates a sudden or swift ending to a situation. If followed by Aces this card suggests that an end will bring new beginnings.
When the 10 of Swords appears with the Death card this necessary and inevitable ending has the potential to be transformative. This interpretation would be amplified by the presence of other revolutionary cards of the Major Arcana such as Judgement and The World.
If the 10 of Swords appears with other 10s or The Wheel of Fortune, the cyclical nature of life is highlighted. The presence of The Sun would also reinforce this idea and indicate that the the world will keep turning, and a new day will come, whatever the drama this day has brought. The Magician would encourage you to seize the new day.
