First impressions

Of all the Queens, this is the one that most resembles The Empress – ruler of the Queens and the ultimate mother archetype. The overall impression is one of peace and calm.

What is happening in the card?

The Queen of Pentacles sits in a woodland bower on a throne carved of stone decorated with cherubs and goats. She is in a three-quarter pose (facing slightly west or to the seeker’s left). A brown rabbit can be seen entering the card from the bottom right corner.

She is framed by an arch of flowers. There are also flowers at her feet and in the background is a lush landscape, with a river running through blue mountains beyond.

Her expression in soft as she gazes down at a golden Pentacle that she is cradling in her lap, almost as a mother would her child. This is the emblem of her suit, and the object of her care and attention.

In comparison to her sister Queens of Swords and Wands, her posture is relaxed, less formal. In this way she more like the Queen of Cups who looks down at her Cups rather then directly out at the world.

She wears robes of white under a red and on her head is a golden crown over a floor-length headdress.

How can we relate to this card?

Water of Earth (complementary elements), the Queen of the Element of Earth The Queen of Pentacles suggests an earthy, healing energy – someone who is grounded, empathetic and tends to care for and nurture people.

This Queen is comfortable in her skin (and sexuality) and embodies the earth mother archetype. She has an open, healthy attitude toward sex and sexuality.

In Tarot and Astrology, she is often associated with Capricorn. She can represent a person (female or male) in your life, or an aspect of your personality, that brings the kind of energy described above. She is that aspect of yourself that is caring and nurturing as well as practical and businesslike.

A good manager of people and processes (whether she’s running a home or a business). Not only does she offer a ‘safe place’ for those who need it but she also provides practical real-world solutions.

She would have all the practical and people skills required for teaching, the medical profession or social work. These are the gifts that the Queen of Pentacles bring to the world.

Message & affirmations

Today, I love, respect and accept myself just as I am. I love, cherish and support my family. I am a brave, loyal and generous friend and I am a fierce, strong, loving mother.

Treat your relationship
As if you are growing
The most beautiful sacred flower.
Keep watering it,
Tend to the roots,
And always make sure
The petals are full of color
And are never curling.
Once you neglect your plant,
It will die,
As will your relationship.

” She held herself until the sobs of the child inside subsided entirely. I love you, she told herself. It will all be okay.”

Queen of Pentacles by Still Small Voice Tarot

My personal experiences of this card

The Tarot Queens are brought together under the rule of the most powerful female archetype of them all, The Empress. The ultimate, the original feminist.

As a single mother who works for herself, for me she is the model of a working woman/mother who can multitask and basically is great at getting things done. A warm and supportive friend. An accomplished businesswoman. Good with money and good with people. She is creative and nurtures creativity in others.

As mentioned above, Pentacles represent the element of earth. Capricorn, of course, is an earth sign and adept at navigating the physical as well as emotional realms, suggesting a person who is both grounded and nurturing.

I have a very close friend, a Capricorn, who fits the profile so well. She is in her element with matters relating to money, home and work as well as the realm of the physical body. She is highly spiritual and has healing gifts.

The Queen of Pentacles also bring a strong message of self love and care.

Events, situations & readings

In a relationship spread:
The Queen of Pentacles in a love and relationships remind us to be gentle and caring towards others and, just as importantly, to be kind to and accepting of ourselves. To accept our bodies in their perfect imperfection and to freely enjoy the physical aspects of a loving relationship.

In a work/career spread:
The Queen brings a practical, business-like energy to a work situation. She could represent and supportive boss of colleague or you playing that role in your business or job.

In a personal development spread:
The Queen of Pentacles encourages you to love, respect and accept yourself. In doing this you must also take good care of yourself in mind, body, heart and soul. She is a grounding influence.

People & interaction with other cards

Alongside The High Priestess or The Empress and other Queens of Tarot, the Queen of Pentacles brings a very powerful, creative feminine energy.

She may indicate a mother or a pregnant woman – this would be amplified by the presence of The Empress or the Princess of Pentacles.
